Deploys in minutes after a decade on one VPS

Challenge

A profitable SaaS product ran on a single, hand-configured VPS. Releases were manual and nerve-wracking, the environment existed nowhere but that one box, and there was no clean way to roll back.

Approach

We containerized the application and moved it to AWS ECS/Fargate behind a load balancer, with managed Postgres on RDS for state. Every piece of infrastructure is declared in Terraform, so the environment is reproducible from code. A GitHub Actions pipeline builds, tests, and deploys on merge, and a blue/green cutover with health checks makes rollback a single command.

Architecture

Docker image → GitHub Actions (build → test → deploy) → ECS Fargate behind ALB → RDS · CloudWatch

AWS ECS Fargate · RDS · ALB · CloudWatch — Terraform IaC, GitHub Actions CI/CD, blue/green cutover

Results

  • Deploys from days to minutes, with one-command rollback*
  • The entire environment reproducible from Terraform, not tribal knowledge
  • Zero-downtime cutover off the legacy VPS
